USA | Jerusalem to Remain as “Place of Birth” in U.S. Passports
June 9, 2015
Yesterday, the U.S. Supreme Court brought to a close the battle between the Executive Branch and Congress as to what “Place of Birth” (“POB") designation is for eligible U.S. citizens born in the City of Jerusalem. In the case of Zivotofsky v. Kerry, the court struck down Section 214 of the FY2003 Foreign Relations Authorization Act, thus ruling in favor of the Obama Administration that, for the time being, U.S. Passports indicate “Jerusalem”, not Israel, as the POB.
The essence of the decision rests on the Executive Branch having the sole authority to formally recognize whether Israel or Palestine has sole sovereignty over the City of Jerusalem. Readers are invited to read more detail here: http://www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/14pdf/13-628_l5gm.pdf
